About the Presenters

Melanie Philipp, Director, Services Methodology

Melanie was first introduced to web accessibility in 2002 while managing a website for a contractor to the U.S. federal government. Inspired by the way digital equality can enrich the lives of people of all abilities, she joined Deque in 2011 to make digital accessibility her full-time focus.

As Director of Services Methodology, Melanie leads Deque’s efforts in creating a unified interpretation and application of accessibility standards (such as WCAG, Section 508, EN 301 549, EU Web Accessibility Directive) across a broad range of digital technologies.

Melanie is an IAAP Certified Professional in Web Accessibility (CPWA), has been a participating member of the W3C’s Accessibility Guidelines Working Group since 2017, and serves as Deque’s Advisory Committee Representative to the W3C.

Wilco Fiers, Product Owner and Developer

Wilco Fiers headshotWilco is a software developer and the product owner of Deque’s axe-core and axe Linter. He has a leading role at the W3C, as project manager of WCAG 3.0 and facilitator of the ACT Task Force. Based in The Netherlands, Wilco is leading Deque’s contribution to the EU-funded WAI-CooP project.

 

 

Glenda Sims, Chief Accessibility Information Officer

Headshot of Glenda SimsGlenda Sims is the Chief Information Accessibility Officer at Deque, where she shares her expertise and passion for the open web with government organizations, educational institutions, and companies ranging in size from small business enterprise.

Glenda is an adviser and co-founder of AIR-University (Accessibility Internet Rally) and AccessU. She serves as an accessibility consultant, judge, and trainer for Knowbility, an organization whose mission is to support the independence of people with disabilities by promoting the availability of barrier-free IT. In 2010 Glenda co-authored the book InterACT with Web Standards: A holistic approach to Web Design.

Rachael Yomtoob, Product Owner

headshot of Rachael YomtoobRachael is the Product Owner for axe DevTools Mobile and has been part of the mobile team at Deque since 2018. They discovered their passion for accessibility while working on a project team at the University of Michigan that developed an Android application to provide indoor navigation for people with visual disabilities. They are a proud cat parent to three fur babies and enjoys spending free time on their hobbies: marching arts, diamond painting, and Zumba.
