New iOS 14 Features and Accessibility

Apple released iOS 14 which includes new features such as Widgets, Back Tap, and the ability for VoiceControl and VoiceOver to be used at the same time. Our team of native mobile experts will review each of these features and how they impact accessibility.

Attendees will see a demo for each of these features and how they may be inaccessible for users with disabilities.

Product Owner - Mobile

Chris McMeekingChris McMeeking is Product Owner for Mobile at Deque Systems, leading development efforts on Deque’s native mobile accessibility analysis products. His journey in accessibility began through a project at the University of Michigan, The ASK Scanning Keyboard. This application won multiple awards including the $100,000 Intel Innovator’s Award, runner up at the Mobile World Congress, and the Student of Da Vinci award from the Multiple Sclerosis foundation. Chris is the lead developer behind the Android Analyzer, and an active member of the task force developing these new accessibility mobile standards.

Jennifer Dailey

Mobile Software Engineer - iOS

Jennifer DaileyJennifer Dailey is a software engineer who has been working in iOS accessibility at Deque since 2015. While Deque was her introduction to accessibility, one of her projects before graduating from the University of Michigan in 2017 was working closely with C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital to create an accessible, stress-relieving Hololens application for children undergoing cancer treatments and other procedures. In her free time, she loves playing video games with friends, knitting, and having board game nights with her family.

Kate Owens

iOS Product Developer

Kate OwensKate Owens is an iOS Developer at Deque since 2019.  Kate has been a mobile developer since she fell in love with iOS programming in 2015 and decided to pursue a programming career.  Kate is passionate about women in STEM, and in 2019 she participated in an a panel in conjunction with Karlie Kloss’ Kode with Klossy organization, and taught a coding workshop for the Kode with Klossy students.  She loves mobile accessibility and new technology, and eagerly awaits Apple’s WWDC every year like it’s a holiday week.   When she’s not working Kate enjoys weaving, snuggling her dog Henri, tattooing and tending to her many house plants.

Jatin VaisshnavJatin Vaishnav, PMP, CPWA, working with Deque since 2007, has professional expertise as an accessibility and usability consultant, including experience in IT projects for the private sector ranging from small businesses to Fortune 50 companies as well as government agencies, educational institutions, healthcare and more. A digital accessibility subject matter expert and a trainer, Jatin specializes in native mobile application accessibility (iOS and Android), helping organizations comply with legal requirements such as ADA, AODA and Section 508, as well as integrate WCAG guidelines into their product lifecycle at every phase of IT projects, going from design, development to quality assurance testing.
